Leaning to the right....

I went flying yesterday, not so much a flight for fun, more one for transport. The weather was officially OK with TEMPO pants and when the time came to take off it was, surprise surprise, TEMPO pants. The destination forecast was OK but soon after taking off and setting course I could see the hills in the distance were merging with the cloud. Not my favourite kind of scud running, so cowl flaps open, prop fine, full power and trim for about 90.

The cloud base was 1,500' and the tops 3,500' so I only spent three minutes or so in cloud, but for whatever reason, those three minutes were filled with a strong sensation of banking to the right.

I don't usually suffer from the leans but today I did and, despite knowing what was going on, it was a pretty unnatural feeling.

It's press week again...

It's press week this week, lots of work, lots of late nights, lots of making dents in office chairs and not much, if any, flying - bet the weather's fantastic.

Lundy again

A couple of weeks ago we flew to Lundy for dinner. It was my fist visit and I was impressed. Although the memory is recent and may yet fade it's looking like the visit to Lundy will go down as one of my all-time favourite flights.

Initially I was a bit worried by this. I've spent a lot of time, money and effort on flying and have had some exceptional experiences, so how come little Lundy island is so special?

The flight there lasted barely an hour, but it did take place on a silky smooth evening in gorgeous light. The route took us over bits of Wiltshire, Somerset and Devon taking in some fantastic scenery including the Somerset levels, Exmoor and the North Devon coast. There was a short overwater flight, followed by a challenging landing. Lundy's runway isn't super short, but its 400 metres aren't really enough to forgive sloppy technique either. Once on the ground, it's quickly obvious that the little Cessna has once again done its magic carpet trick and transported us from one world to another

Flightseeing

I've been sorting through some pictures taken on recent flights, thought I'd experiment with some blogger slideshow tools.
